Subject: [*] centris-clock-mod-11
Text File for Tech folder which describes how to accelerate a Centris
610 to Centris 650 speeds and beyond by changing the clock oscillator.
This procedure is similar to that for the Quadra 700.
--------------------------------------------------
Centris 610 Clock Mod Version 1.1
by Guy Kuo
This information is only for those who are technically adept. The process
requires soldering leads to surface mount components. This is not a good first
soldering project and should be done only with electrostatic discharge safe
equipment and the usual ESD workmats, etc. You will void your warranty. If you
ruin your motherboard, your friends will laugh at you.
Now that you have been properly warned, the procedure:
1) Apply ESD equipment and open the Mac. The power should be disconnected and
the machine properly grounded. Disconnect and remove the hard drive to gain
access to the clock oscillator. The metal shield in front of the hard drive
pops off. The hard drive then slides forward and out.
2) Look just in front of the CPU. You will see a small 4 pin plastic IC
which is marked 10 MHz. That is the original clock. You may either desolder
it and replace with a new clock of a higher speed or install a socket. I
prefer to place a socket.
3) Assuming you wish to add a socket, obtain a 14 pin IC socket. Remove all
pins except numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12 and 14. If you use a machined
pin socket simply push the unwanted pins out with a needle nose plier.
4) Cut the socket leads off the corner pins (#1, 7, 8 & 14) The remaining
four central leads will later attach to the original oscillator.
5) Use some hook up wire on the underside of the socket to connect
pin 5 to pin 7.
6) Connect pin 8 to pin 10.
7) Connect pin 12 to pin 14
8) Mount the socket such that pins of the socket match the oscillator pins
as below. This means the socket's four pins ride on top of the original
oscillator's leads. Simple lap joint soldering holds the socket in place.
Socket Oscillator
3 1
5 2
10 3
12 4
9) Install a wire jumper between socket holes 3 and 5. This grounds the output
enable pin 1 of the existing oscillator disabling it.
10) Install a full size TTL oscillator into your 14 pin socket. Pin 1 of the
new oscillator goes into pin 1 of the socket.
11) Add a heatsink and (optionally?) a cooling fan to the CPU. I routinely
add a cooling fan on top of my heatsinks for this type of modification.
A 40 mm low profile 12 volt fan will do nicely.
12) Turn on the machine and it should "Bong" as usual. If not, IMMEDIATELY
turn power off and recheck your connections.
If you do not understand how this procedure works, very seriously reconsider
whether YOU should be doing it.
To run the machine at normal speed, unplug your oscillator and remove the
jumper wire between socket holes 3 & 5.
Remember the numbering of the socket top view is:
14--12 10---8
----------------
| |
> |
| /--\ |
----------------
1 3 5----7
The on board oscillator pins are numbered:
4 3
------
| |
> |
| |
------
1 2
Clock chip speed is 1/2 the desired speed so order appropriately. Do not
obtain clock oscillators with output enable on pin 1 for this procedure.
If you insist on output enable oscillators, you must add a 1 k resistor
between socket pins 1 and 14 to enable your new oscillator.
Digikey at 1-800-DIGIKEY is a reasonable parts supplier. Here are some part
numbers:
ED3314 14 Pin Machined gold contact socket
HS154ND 0.25 inch tall heatsink for 68040 with clips
Some reasonable clock oscillators to obtain are:
CTX114 10 MHz
CTX131 12 MHz
CTX115 14.3 MHz
X127 14.7 MHz
Please send E-mail so I can gather and summarise successes and problems
with this modification. Good luck and enjoy your new super fast C610.

Dialog View (formerly List Font) is a control panel that allows you to
change the font and size used in directory dialog file lists, and display
the real icons of files in such lists. It requires System 7. If you use it
together with my Open-wide program (version 3.3 or later for best results),
you will be able to use larger fonts without cramping the list. Compatible
with Super Boomerang 4.0.1, not compatible with Norton's Directory
Assistance.
New in 1.0.5: Fixed a bug that caused crashes for some users.
New in 1.0.6: Doesn't crash if a second directory dialog appears while one
is already present, and fixes a problem with the color of the Trash.
1.0.7: Patches a rare conflict with Super Boomerang, and other obscure
and cosmetic changes.

Dear Moderator:
This submission should replace /info-mac/game/maelstrom-martin-sounds.hqx
in the archive. The new version of maelstrom (1.2) requires sounds samples at
11kHz, so the maelstrom sounds I posted a while back no longer work with
maelstrom 1.2. I downsampled the sounds and the enclosed file can be
used with the new version of maelstrom. Just move (or rename) your old
maelstrom sound file and put this file in your maelstrom folder. You
will need to increase maelstroms memory size (in the Get Info box) to
around 3000K. Then play, and have fun!

Mishu-Wuhan Demo 2.04 is a DA and extension with a set of fonts that allow one
to paste Chinese characters as text or pictures into other applications such
as Microsoft Word, MacWrite, Hypercard, Word Perfect or any application that
accepts Apple's standard Styled Text or Pict clipboards. Chinese Word or
MacWrite documents can be imported into PageMaker and QuarkExpress. It will
work under System 6.0.7 or 7 and best of all, you do not need to have Apple's
ChineseTalk System or WorldScript installed! Printing is very slow on
postscript laserprinters, but only slightly longer on QuickDraw printers
such as the Imagewriter, LaserWriter LS and Sytlewriter. Faxing documents is
also quite fast. The method of character selection is similar to ChineseTalk
via pinyin. The only difference between this demo and the full version is
only the characters up to the pinyin "feng" are here.
The DA will not work properly unless both the fonts and extension are
installed and the System restarted. The demo guide is in Word Format.
You can open it with MacWrite, Microsoft Word or any other word processor
that can handle that format by first opening the application and selecting
Open from the file menu. Choose the Guide when the get file dialog appears.
Instructions on ordering the full version are included in the demo guide.
Mishu was given a four and a half mice rating by MacUser magazine in 1989.
Version 2.04 is fully compatible with System 7.1.

Enclosed is a BinHexed Compact Pro file that contains
NoteCard 2.4.6. This is to replace the current file NoteCard
245. This latest version of NoteCard fixes a few minor bugs
and can now import files from other databases.
NoteCard 2.4.6 application is for creating
review questions to facilitate studying for examinations.
Included with this ShareWare package are about 700
pathology review questions based on medical school
lectures and pathology textbooks. These questions are
useful for studying for NBME part I (medical boards).
Persons paying the $15.00 ShareWare fee will receive an
additional 7000+ questions dealing with most all aspects
of NBME parts I and II.
Reviewed in the April 1993 issue of Medical Software
Reviews:
"The program covers a broad range of
subjects and should be useful to students seeking a
review in the format of multiple questions. It might
be of even greater use to students who want to use the
authoring system throughout medical school to prepare
their own questions for ongoing study. At $15 it is
a bargain."
NoteCard is system 7 compatible, 32 bit compatible
and was developed on the Quadra (therefore 040 compatible)
and works on the Plus with System 6.0.x also. Code was
written with Think C 5.0 using the TCL 1.1.1.
Documentation is included.
The review questions were written by a medical
student that received 700 (99th percentile) on
NBME part I.

the MACS is a freeware application which displays a large number of specs for
all Macs that have ever been released. For a more thorough description, see
Info-Mac Digest v11-106, or the help included in the MACS.
The major improvements in version 1.0b2 are:
-Added many missing specs.
-Added more info in the Help dialog.
-Added some distinguishing info in the alerts you get when selecting a
Performa or Workgroup Server. (Thanks to Andy Ihlenfeldt for pointing out
that needed to distinguish these.)
-Fixed a bug that could cause a crash if you clicked in the Mac type pop-up
menu and then released the button outside of the menu. (Thanks to Stepan
Riha for alerting me to this.)
-Fixed a problem with scrolling in the Help dialog.
-Fixed a bug that could lead to garbage being displayed for the specs in the
main window. (I only saw this when turning on heap scrambling in
MacsBug, but I'm sure somebody would eventually run into it.)
Other people who provided specs and/or suggestions: Victor E Aldridge III
(Lonadar the Wanderer), Kevin Fong, Kent Irwin, Mike Murdock, Gregory
Talmo, and Hans de Wolf. Thanks!
This is a beta version of the MACS. I don't have all the specs yet. I would

I have since been kindly informed that I erred in posting Tardis/Timelord

I had no problems installing DW 3.9 and DW 4.0 drivers, once I realized
that I should run it from a floppy and named Install 1. I admit that it is
not quite obvious, but when I got the error message regarding the missing
disk "Install 1", I tried renaming a floppy to Install 1, and it worked. I
have already installed it on 3 Macs with no problems.
What sort of special formatting and configuration is needed?
I noticed no difference in the Print Preview feature of the driver
(accesible via the Preview button in the Print dialog). Did you confuse
this with some application's print preview?

I use System 6.0.4 on my Plus (4 Meg memory, no hard drive). System 6.0.4
is significantly smaller that 6.0.8. I have found that I can run just
about anything with 6.0.4 on the Plus that does not require System 7 (for
which I use an LCII). You can replace the LaserPrinter driver in System
6.0.4 with System 7 drivers, if necessary. I can obtain a System Folder
bigger than 800K by creating it in a RAM disk.

Word 5.1a allows you to print even (or odd) pages via a radio button in the
print dialog. I think that is one of the extra features in the upgrade. It
is worth the $14.95 upgrade cost (IMO), but the cost could be more in OZ.

I just upgraded my PowerBook to a 120M drive. After doing that, FileSharing
would take over an hour to start up. It was never speedy with the 40M drive,
but it wasn't this slow. Well, I remembered that the FileSharing info is
stored in an invisible file at the root level called "AppleShare PDS" which
has a nifty killer rabbit icon. I made this sucker visible, threw it in the
trash and rebooted. I had to redo all my shared file preferences, but that's
minor in my case, so it wasn't a big deal. FileSharing now starts up in
less than a minute.
So, if you are experiencing delays with FileSharing starting up, ditch the
PDS file and start over with a fresh one. It helps a lot.

I used a NEOTECH PAL encoder, purchased earlier this year from Computers
Unlimited in London via my usual Apple dealer at a cost of #200 + VAT.
It outputs in VHS, superVHS, and also provides a pipe-through for a
standard RGB monitor.
It accepts output from an Apple 8-24 video board, though I used the
existing Radius GX board in my IIci.
The only problem (and this _isn't_ made clear by the documentation), is
that the encoder doesn't output a signal compatible with the standard
aerial input socket on your TV/VCR.
Not knowing this, I was frantic trying to test the equipment before an
important seminar earlier this year, and was having no success on the TV at
home, nor on the TV in the hotel. I even returned the encoder as faulty and
requested a replacement.
After lengthy phones calls to my dealer, and thence to CU's tech support, I
discovered that the signal is in RGB, and you need a monitor that accepts
input from a BNC connector - the same connector as thin coax Ethernet.
(They claimed that most modern TVs will accept RGB, and were stunned when I
told them this hadn't been the case.)
Once in the lecture theatre, however, the projectionists hooked me up to
their system without a hiccup, and the quality was superb.
Due to the difference in the way monitors and TVs use the available screen
area, however, be prepared to lose about 10% of the image where the TV
screen bleeds it off the edges.
I'm writing this without the manual in front of me, so can't offer more
details, but hope this helps.

The issue is not what was described on internet, but is as follows:
3.0b addresses two specific issues:
a. Problem loosing TYPE/CREATOR information when saving a
presentation to a network that does not support Apple
File Protocol 3.0.
Nearly all network vendors have versions that now
support AFP 3.0, so this fix is only necessary for those
installations that have not upgraded their network
software
b. Problem with the Apple floppy disk driver that can cause
system error when saving a presentation, which may
result in the loss of any work done on any open documents
on the computer, since the last time they were successfully saved.
NO files are damaged and no other data is lost.
DEFINITELY NO damage or loss of data to any
files residing on a hard drive.
Please make sure that this is clarified as soon as possible, if
you have an account on the Internet.
Thanks,
John Langhans

Can somebody please fill me in on this issue? Who do I ask, and how

be? The customer asking this question is a very influential person at
DuPont. Thanks very much in advance for your assistance.

Hi, guys. See attached from Mark Milbourne at the Experimental

this problem with PowerPoint and give me any additional details
you can come up with? The message has already gone to at least a
hundred key people in DuPont, but I wanted to dial your comments

Just saw this today on Usenet. You should probably forward to any heavy Mac
PowerPoint users. Apparently version 3.0b has been shipping for at least a
little while already so chances are that many people have this version
already.
As usual, if v3.0 is owned, the maintenance update is free. If you need to
update and can't find a copy of 3.0b, let me know.

Subject: MAJOR Powerpoint 3.0 BUG!
Just heard thru the local grapevine that there's a major bug with
the latest version of PowerPoint for Macintosh, Version 3.0. Microsoft
confirmed this rumor over the phone and offered a few "do's and don'ts"
as follows:
The problem occurs whenever you work with a floppy diskette or a remotely
mounted volume from inside PowerPoint, such as save to a floppy or save to
a mounted volume. Apparently, Microsoft hasn't fully nailed down the
circumstances under which this bug will bite you, but the rep I talked to
recommended that I only work from the hard drive. If you need a file sent
elsewhere, or on a floppy, do it from the Finder.
The result of the bug seems to be that the hard drive AND the floppy can be
***ERASED***
by using the floppy. Yes, ERASED. So if you value your data, don't write
to a floppy until you get the patched version, v 3.0B.
When I spoke to the Microsoft rep I was immediately promised replacement
program disks in the mail, even FedEx'd if required. So Microsoft must
really know how bad this one is. If you own the new version, call
Microsoft for a replacement, or something; just be careful until you get
the new version.
For your info, enlightenment, safety, or whatever...

Subject: MFM Floppies, PC's, & Giving the Finger
Bryan Walls <bwalls@marvin.msfc.nasa.gov>, in the course of discussing
the impending loss of the self-ejecting floppy disk slot on (some?)
Macs, says that this is necessary for compatibility with IBM-type folks
whose floppies are designed for ejection by the finger.
Huh? The floppy disk doesn't CARE! I use IBM compatible floppies of
either size (720K or 1.44M) in my SuperDrive, with Dayna DOS Mounter
and/or SoftPC, and they've never complained about being auto-ejected!
Besides, although it is probably true that the forthcoming PowerPC is
intended to bring along a new load of IBM-oriented defectors as well
as the current crop of Apple Mac users, it should probably be said out
loud at least once: the PowerPC, whatever else it may be, is NOT a
Macintosh, any more than my Mac is an IBM-PC, any more than my friend's
Commodore-Amiga is a Macintosh; the ability to EMULATE someone else's
platform doesn't equal true full-bore compatibility.
Therefore, whatever arguments might make sense about the PowerPC being
positioned to appeal to both MS-DOSsers and Mac users are irrelevant to
the increasingly troubling question of what Apple is doing with (or to)
the Macintosh. Frankly, those GCR 800K disks are a lot more durable
than the hi-density MFM disks are; the electronic information is coded
in more emphatically and is therefore more resistant to corrupting
interferences. I say give Apple back their finger. So to speak.

FYI --
At home I have been operating, under System 7.0.1/1.1.1, a Mac SE accelerated
by a Mobius '030 25 mhz accelerator, and augmented by a Mobius 2-page
display.
I have had enormous compatibility problems with extensions. My full set of
extensions numbers about 50, and I could never run more than about 20 of
them.
Further, some recent upgrades to my extensions either would not work at all or
would require even more extensions to be exluded from my "line-up".
At Mobius' suggestion I installed System 7.1. ALL -- not some, but ALL --
conflicts vanished! In fact, except for anti-virus extensions, which I load
first, and StuffIt Spacesaver, which I load last, all the remaining extensions
are loaded in their system-default order!
If your software is up-to-date, I would not hesitate to convert from 7.0.1 to
7.1.
BTW --
At work I have a Quadra 700 with a similarly large set of extensions. I did
not have many problems on the Quadra, but I had to define about a dozen rules
to NOW Utilities Startup Manager to achieve this reliable state. Under System
7.1 all the rules became unnecessary!

As always when I hear this question, I recommend (1) snowball ref
notes, a bibliography hypercard stack with note-taking facility
built in (you might have to modify it to get it have the keyword
capability you want, but this is not hard) and (2) PSI, a database
program that lets you set up fields (for bibliographic info),
associate a file (for taking notes in), and assign plenty of
keywords with good, quick search later on.
Both available for ftp on sumex.

APPLE TAKES AGGRESSIVE PRICING ACTIONS IN U.S.
CAMPBELL, California--June 14, 1993--As part of its ongoing
commitment to gain marketshare for the Macintosh brand of personal

Subject: Problems with generating smooth sounds
I am trying to use the sound manager to play sounds which are being
generated in real time. As a simple test, I have generated a sine wave,
and am sending it along an open channel, in parts rather than as one
single buffer, to simulate the way the real samples will be sent. I have
tried sending many different sized buffers, from 40 bytes, to 370, to
10240, but for some reason I get a clicking sound at the end of each buffer
rather than a smooth tone. Initially, I was sending the sound manager a
buffer (using the bufferCmd), then a callBackCmd which would mark the
buffer as used, then another buffer, etc. I figured that the callbacks
were causing the delay, so I used a large circular buffer to hold the
samples and never sent a callBackCmd. This seemed to make no difference in
the behaviour. I also tried using the continueCmd after the first buffer,
but this too made no difference. Also, I dumped the entire sine wave to a
file and played it using some sound player, and it sounded fine, so it
would seem that there is no discontinuity in the generated sound. So, does
anyone know how to play *generated* sound continuously using the sound
manager? By the way, I tried this on a Mac IIfx and a Quadra 800, with
the same results. Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Thanks...Michael

Subject: Producing CD-ROMs?
I am currently investigating the possibilities of producing a CD or
two,
and then maybe some more, and am currently looking for some info/opinions.
Essentially I see two choices, 1. sending a DAT tape to a service that
will produce both the master from it, and then subsequent copies. In this
regard
Who can do this, and what are the hurdles that need to be jumped. Cost, is of
course, a concern.
2. PUrchasing a box from Pinnacle that allows the writing of original
CDs straight from your desktop. Again, whatever info you may have would be
great
especially if you have bought and used one of these setups.
Other issues that I see as relevant are standards, If possible I would
like to be able to create both mac and windows versions of a CD incoroporating
Quicktime, and maybe SGI, which is now supporting QT. So any info on
authouring
systems that work of both, or all three platfroms would also be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks all for your time and info.

Subject: Quadra 800, Centris 650 WARNING!!!
I just found out THE HARD WAY that Apple shipped a significant number
of Quadra 800's with the internal hard drive INCORRECTLY CONNECTED!!!!
This can lead to actual physical damage to your hard disk!
The mistake is this: The Quadra comes with a SCSI ribbon cable with
several connectors on it (several power connectors as well). The
Quadra 800 uses a new type of automatic termination that REQUIRES
a disk drive to be connected to the FINAL CONNECTOR AT THE END OF
THE RIBBON. This is true of single and multiple internal drive setups.
Something must be in that last connector. If you do not have any
other SCSI devices connected (externally) to your computer, you may
not yet see a problem. However the Quadra 800 is by far the most
SCSI sensitive computer Apple has made. You will have many problems
that appear to be anything but SCSI problems.
All of these statements are almost direct quotes from Apple Tech
Support (1-800-APPL-SOS). They prefer to send an Apple Tech to your
location to fix it. You can make the change yourself if you want.
However, the Apple Tech said that after fixing the cable (and perhaps
the power connector), you MUST reformat your hard disk (he said do it
TWICE). If you still have problems, the drive has been physically
damaged and must be replaced. Of course, this is when it would have been
better to call the Apple repair guy than mess with it yourself, for the
sake of your warranty. Better to call, I think.
Lastly, he suggested moving the drive down to the lowest snap-in
drive bay (I thought this was a good design) to make it easier to
connect to the last SCSI connector.
Now for the Centris 650: I'm sorry, I can't remember if he said this
was a possible problem with the 650, but I *seem* to remember this.
In our case, we could connect a Syquest 44 for a while and it would be
OK. But in less than 6 hours, a MAJOR BOMB that would CORRUPT the
directory structure so that NO UTILITY COULD REPAIR IT (Norton Utils,
MacTools, Disk First Aid). This happened almost instantly with more
than one SCSI device. When it crashes, it corrupts the System Folder
path in such a way that it cannot access the System Folder, so you get
a flashing "?" disk icon. Only Disk First Aid will make the disk
appear on the desktop again (but you can't FIX it). We got ours
working long enough to make a Startup RAM disk (using a shareware
RAM disk utility), boot from a RAM disk, and copy most of the disk
(up to the System Folder, everything alphabetically afterwards is
HISTORY!!), and use Retrospect to back up to our just-arrived
DAT drive.
Be Careful!

To prevent both my mailbox and the info-mac threas from overflooding I impose
some rules on replies:
- be short and informative.
- please only reply if you can compare at least two of these programs
- don't reply to the info-mac list, but reply directly to me
Topics of interest to me are:
- stability under system 7.x, 32 bit clean
- perceived speed (i.e: speed of user interface), measured on a fairly
'standard'
machine (say IIsi with FPU and plenty of RAM)
- user interface (of which 'perceived speed' is an important part)
- support for future systems (both hardware and software), either through
probable
availability of updates or through good conformance to programming
standards.
Topics of less interest:
- quality of program from a software engineer's point of view (i.e: only
mention
lousy programming practices as probable causes of imcompatibilty,
instability,
slowness of the program, don't go into details)
- availability of zillions of functions. I occasionally need sin, cos, tan,
log
and the like; financial functions like irr, npv, or whatever they are
called
are of no interest to me.
If enough meaningful responses crop up I will distill an overview to the net.

A consideration not often enough raised in these debates is the
quality of your power supply. I have lived in places (New Zealand, a
tiny rural town in upstate NY) where I would expect power
fluctuations and short outages. These things can be *very* bad for
your computer and hard disk. So I have come to regard having my
computer on *at all* as a risk (makes it kinda hard to get any work
done!!!!), and if it is on and there is a brown-out, I want to be at
the computer so I can shut it off rather than have the power then
come up again, which is where the real danger lies.
On the other hand, if you are not nervous about these things, there
is probably no harm whatever in leaving the computer on. Adam Engst
just published a long thing about this, I think right here on
info-mac. He's not afraid to leave his computer on all the time even
though one time he lost a hard disk when a drunk hit a telephone
pole. So, chacun a son gout...

Subject: Using Non-Disk Image 3.9 &4.0 HP DW drivers
Hello,
The HP Deskwriters drivers that are not disk images can be used in the
following manner
1) name a floppy "Install 1" (its the name of the folder you will get after
you
expand the archive)
2) Copy only the contents of the file "Install 1" onto your disk.
3) Run the installer
Warning
1) HP DW driver 3.9 will not print the contents of a window in non-background
printing. Attempting to do so will yield an out of memory error and give you
the option of printing it in teh background. This will work. I have a Mac
SE/30, with System 7.0.1 tuned and 5MB of memory, so it may be a problem
unique
to my computer. The 4.0 driver does not have this problem, so get it if
possible.
2) I've been told that the 3.9 driver causes the out of memory problem when
used with "Easy Envelopes +" and that 4.0 works fine with it. So, if you use
EE+, get the 4.0 version.

hi,
does anyone know if when you set wais-station 1.1 to perform a search on a
weekly basis etc, will it get everything each time, or will it only show
new items since the last time it searched? and if not is there any way to
make it only pick up new items?
also, does the program have to be on permanently for this to work and how
does it inform you when the search is done?

Subject: What is the correct PPD file??? (Q)
I just got the laserwriter 8.0 driver from ftp.apple.com. I have a RISC
printer
called a "Real Tech Laser" that I bought from Hardware that Fits. The
Laserwriter 8.0 dialogoue thinks that I need a PPD file called LZR960.
I looked at ftp.adobe.com and didn't find any such thing (although they have
a bunch). I suspect that this printer is secretly relabeled by the retailer,
so does anyone know what PPD file I need? Or how to find out?
Sorry if this is a FAQ....

Actually, it sounds like you've got an extension working for you. What
System 7 Finder does when you command click on the title bar of the active
window is to show you a menu of the folders that contain this folder. You
can then choose one of them and that window will open/come to the front.
Doing this with the option key down will simultaneously hide the window
you started on.

Well, well. It was really an extension, not the Finder, that did the trick.
That's /info-mac/ex/drag-window-ii-23.hqx by Michael Grossmann.
Small, very useful, and free! BTW, the feature was not mentioned in the
documentation. I said I've rtfm. ;-)

So _that's_ how Microsoft develops such large, pell-mell oversized
programs! :-) I would simply return the letter to the sender asking not
to be a part of the development team for the next version of the Gates
User Interface [GUI] (tm). However, if they ask you to write code for
Word 6 for the Mac or FoxPro/Mac, jump at it.
Seriously, we all know that chain letters are nothing but an idle threat
>From an idle programmer waiting for oversized Microsoft code to compile.
You didn't mention this, but had the message been sent to you over the
internet, then it would be in violation of NSF's rules for use of the
network. There are also policies against perpetuating chain letters
through many corporate and academic in-house mail systems, both electronic
and conventional. In other words, don't sweat it.

Subject: Word 5.1 Save As to another format
I work in an office where the approved word-processing software is WP 5.1
for the PC (not even Windows :-( ). I don't do WordPerfect, at least not
WP 5.1. My work-around has been to use Word 5.1 on my PB145. This has two
shortcomings which are really annoying. First, you have to do a "Save
As..." and re-type the filename every time you save, i.e., Word doesn't
remember the filename. The second problem is that Word's internal
translator is somewhat shy of being able to be marketed as a stand-alone
product. There is usually lots of stuff to be cleaned up, especially in
legal documents, which comprise the bulk of my work.
Is there anything out there, shareware or otherwise, that will help me
out? I like the idea of having a built-in translator. Has anyone besides
MS employed the XTND technology to program internal translators?
Thanks,

Hi Netters,
I'm doing a bit of expert system programming using the XLISP system on the
Mac.
Now I have the necessity to couple the XPS-Module with a conventional numeric
program written in FORTRAN. I have the possibility to couple them directly or
via a data handling routine in C (I would prefer C).
XLISP provides mechanisms for such linking of C and FORTRAN routines according
to the online help. But I haven't yet succeeded in doing so and I definitely
don't want to have to change to a DOS platform.
Has anyone got an example of such a coupling? I have Think C and Mac MPW
FORTRAN available. How to write the C/FORTRAN routine and how to achieve the
linking with the XLISP code that is run in interpreted mode?
Thanks for any hints

Is anyone aware of a PPD file for the NEC Silentwriter 2
Model 90 laser printer which will work with the new
Laserwriter 8.0 driver from Apple? LW 8.0 complains
that the PPD file that came with my printer back in '91
is not a legitimate PPD file.
